Newt is an outsider. He is someone who has an amazing emotional relationship with his creatures but is perhaps less capable with human beings. He is an man of passion and keen interest, but at the same time he is no pushover. Over the course of the film he learns to connect and become closer to the people around him. He keeps his relationship with his beasts quite discreet; most of it happens down in his case, or in the solitude of his travels around the world. There are moments in the film where the people around him find him eccentric, complicated, knotty and difficult, but they see in hisrelationship with the creatures that he has a large heart.

There is a real child-like quality to Newt and it's something that binds Tina, Jacob, Queenie, and my character together over the course of the film. There is a child-like wonder to all four of them and a passion for life,and for Newt that means his beasts. You feel as if he's been obsessed with these creatures from an early age. These beasts are his escape form reality. And yet they are their very own reality - they need to be fed regularly and there is a sense of ritual about that. They need to be constantly looked after.They are his children in some ways.

What was wonderful about working on Fantastic Beasts was getting to dive into J.K Rowling's world, a world that's so rich and deeply imaginative.But the challenge was to make it as real as possible. Particularly in regard to all these extraordinary creatures, I wanted to make sure Newt had a unique relationship with each and everyone as one would with different children. They are the only things he truly cares about. This is until this story begins and his world changes...

"It was utterly charming and had some very beautiful themes which I felt were typically Jo," Yates continues. "I felt connected and invested in the four central characters, all of whom are like grown-up children. They're all quite pure. They're all quite innocent."

He's an oddball,' says Eddie Redmayne. "He's got his own agenda. He's got his own interests and he lives his own life. In many ways he's not a people pleaser. He is a man who feels more at home with creatures then he doeswith human beings."

"He's never been to New York," says producer David Heyman. "He's never seen steam coming up from the underground. He's never seen this much traffic in his life. He's never seen a city as vital as New York, and so he is very much a fish out of water."

"The fact that he is an Englishman in New York really adds to the layer of otherness," says Carmen Ejogo who stars as MACUSA President Seraphina Picquery, "and he is the perfect embodiment of [that] otherness. He's certainly not your typical hero. He comes with foibles and insecurities and all kinds of messiness, from the costume to the hair to the mistakes hemakes throughout."

"New York, even now, is the most frenzied, wonderful, noisy and colorful of places," says Redmayne. "And for him, having spent a year by himself, suddenly stepping foot into this city, there's a wonder and acuriosity to everything around him. He sees what's in front of him in theworld. He takes everything at face value, which I love."

"There's this odd, buddy movie quality to these two people who couldn't be more different," says Redmayne of Newt and Jacob. "With Tina, it's a slow build connection. These two people are outsiders, yet passionate, and begin to glimpse and find each other. Friendship is the core of this quartet who start in completely opposite directions and end up as friends.That camaraderie is an essential element."

The graphics team created a copy of Newt's Fantastic Beasts manuscript complete with typed pages and "erratic sketches," as well as correspondence between himself and his publisher Obscurus Book. And, as requested by J.K. Rowling, they also fashioned a Bestiarium Magicum. "She wanted a bestiary, which is a medieval tome on the accounting of animals,"reveals Mina. "It's the only Bestiarium in existence," notes fellowg raphic designer Eduardo Lima. "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is intended to replace this one."

Whenit came to Newt, Atwood knew immediately what he should wear. "He's been living in the wilderness. He adapts everything to what he needs, but he has to blend with the real world. It was about using the silhouette of the period, but making his clothes a little mismatched and a little ill-fitting. So I chose a dirty peacock blue for his coat. That was his defining silhouette. A cooler tone on top with warmer tones underneath."

And much like a magician's, Atwood designed Newt's coat with all manner of secret pockets. "He keeps pets in there. He has some of his medicines in there. We probably see very little of it, but it was fun to develop and playwith. Eddie's a great collaborator and so everything was designed to work with the character he was creating physically as well as aesthetically."

"It was wonderful working with Colleen," says Eddie Redmayne. "Finding out what men were wearing, then finding the offbeat and exploring this coat which is a massive element of Newt's character. He reallyonly wears one outfit the whole way through, but the collar pops and the trousers go into his boots, and there's a slightly eccentric, nerdy quality to him,although he looks a bit more like an adventurer by the end."

When J.K. Rowling saw their first pass at the environment, she told the design team it was "too epic, too ambitious. It's much smaller," recalls Power. "Jo felt it was great, but that a wizard more powerful than Voldermort would be needed to create [it]," remembers Manz. "Newt's a good, talented wizard but he wouldn't be able to create what he had done, which was an enormous reality. "

So Power started reworking the environments to make them "slightly off, slightly chuncky." Eventually arriving at a series of designs that were "more homemade, more Heath Robinson"according to Burke. "Newt loves animals so much he's gone to great trouble of creating these worlds, but doesn't see his career as that. He's just pleased the animals are happy. So the environment are individually designed for each creatures, but all share alanguage that relates to Newt and the 1920s."

It was decided too that the atmosphere of each habitat would leak into those around it. That weather bleeding was also designed to serve as kind of subtextual explanatory as to how the animals might escape. Partly because they're not caged and therefore free to roam, and partly because the magic Newt used to contain them isn't powerful enough. 'The magic he's using is a bit like him," laughs Manz," a bit shambolic."

This is Newt's home away from home. More than just a place from which he tends his animals, it's a refuge, a retreat, says Craig. "And Newt is a very independent character being solitary seems to be a necessarypart of life at times and so we gave him a shed. He has a workbench. He has a bed under the bench. He has a stove, an armchair. It is a great place for a man like Newt to be alone."

The interior of Newt's shed is his most personal space. "It really is his character described in the most intricate physical terms,"says Eddie Redmayne.

Like Newt, it's a little messy, a tad askew and chockfull of stuff. "Theinterior was one of the few opportunities for the props to convey the world of Newt and his personality," explains set director Anna Pinnock. "The idea was developed from a standard garden shed which was a adapted and distorted in dimension to create an unusually tall, narrow and extremely confined space, dressed to suit Newt's other-worldly and eccentricpersonality."

"We wanted to suggest Newt had travelled extensively in both the real and fantasy world," Pinnock continues,"so we introduced ethnic pieces, agricultural and zookeeper's tools with a great variety of unusual containers and receptacles."

It might be my favourite thing on the film, watching [Newt] engage with the animals because each relationship is different and he has developed ways of communicating with them," recalls Fogler. "Some animals he has more of a personal connection with or a more intimate connection, but he cares for all of them so much, and it's one of the things that catches Tina'seyes, his relationship with the animals."

Thunderbird 雷鸟

"He's very much a American bird,"says Eddie Redmayne. "When I find him before the film starts, he's in Egypt, where he had been trafficked, because Thunderbirds are incredibly valuable. He has this extraordinary quality that he can sense danger. Also his mood is reflected by the weather, so if he is frightened or excited then the rain pours."

White in color with multiple shimmering wings, a gold beak and eyes,the Thunderbird was based on an early Occamy concept. "The idea was that the's the all-America eagle. You could imagine him at the top of a totem pole,"says VFX supervisor Christian Manz.

"One of the more delightful aspects of the story is that you're taken in to it by Jacob," says David Yates. "And we are Jacob. We experiencedmany of these things from his point of view. And he's delightful."

Employed in a canning factory and living in a tenement on Manhattan's Lower East Side, Jacob has only just returned to the United States from France after serving in World War 1, a conflict that ended eight years before.

After Newt arrives, the two men strike up an unlikely friendship as Jacob joins him on his quest to track down his missing creatures. "I become Newt's Sherpa, his guide to the city, because he doesn't know New York," explains Fogler.

Newt introduces me to his magical, amazing, fantastic world. The Sherlock Holmes and Watson aspect really spoke to me. This is a fairy tale with wizards and witches and crazy creatures. Jacob becomes incredibly fascinated wtih this other universe."

"Queenie is an angel," says Fogler. "The two of them start to fall in love and it gives Jacob a real reason to stick around, but in the wizarding world there are strict laws that say we're not allowed to be together. It's forbidden, which mirrors the racism of the time. It's really beautiful how J.K Rowling parallels all these cultural issues in the story."

"[When] Jacob gets thrown into this magical adventure, he can't quite believe it," says producer David Heyman. "Things haven't gone his way. However, he has always remained an enthusiast, full of possibility, believing in the possibilities of life and when he encounters these magical folk, he sees a whole world he could have never imagined."

Jacob's clothes are much more rumpled and baggier, again are flection his character. "Jacob's what you'd describe as a schlub,"notes costume designer Colleen Atwood. "We meet him trying to get a loan from a bank and while most men of that era wore a tie, pulled themselves together, and had a suit that looked like presentable, Jacob has so little money he has to buy used clothes. But because of his shape, they don't fit." Also, he doesn't own a coat. "I  add it on purpose. There's a poverty to not having a coat in the coldness."

Porpentina Goldstein, or Tina for short, works in the Wand Permit Office of the Magical Congress of the United States of America having been recently been demoted from her position as an Auror in the Investigations Department for an infraction that resulted in her exposure as a witch to No-Majs.

"She broke the rules in order to protect someone who was introuble," explains actress Katherine Waterston of Tina who also has to wear an Admonitor bracelet as a result of her recklessness. "Though she's really proud to be a part of MACUSA and dreams of succeeding there, when push comes to shove she will abandon the rule book. I found it really touching. She loves the rules, but if someone's in trouble, she can't help herself.

When Tina first meets Newt in Fantastic Beasts and Where to FindThem, their interaction couldn't be any less romantic: she arrests him in an alleyway outside Steen National Bank and brings him to MACUSA for processing."My general sense of who he is at the beginning is he's dangerous and untrustworthy, and probably kind of cute," laughs Katherine Waterston."Part of what I love about Tina is she's flawed and often doesn't achieve what she is pursuing or things don't work out for her [like] she hopes. But she is good at her job and the moment she sees Newt she knows something is going on, even though she doesn't exactly know what. And that, to me, was the first clue that she's not a total disaster. She has good instincts. She knows she has a lot of potential, but can't seem to convince people of it.

"I think Newt sees that potential in her," she continues."That's a lot of what falling in love is, you feel someone else recognizing what you have to offer. As their relationship evolves, she sees what's motivating him, and then you start to notice they are both very passionate about what they do, they are both a little stunted, not very good at expressing themselves, and you start to see the reasons why they have become that way. He's very isolated in his work. She is taking care of her sister because they lost their parents when they were young. They're two people who really haven't had too much time to have a good time. In contrast to Jacob and Queenie who are much freer."

Tina lives with her sister, Queenie (actress-Alison Sudol), who also works at MACUSA, in a brownstone in Midtown Manhattan. Being orphans, they look out for each other as best they can. "They parent teach other in different ways - they are very different women," says Waterston. "I'm a bit more the father and she's bit more the mother. She's got a very generous maternal quality. She cooks beautiful, elaborate meals. And maybe in their loneliness they've fallen into that dynamic [of] where I'm trying to be the breadwinner and she's doing the ironing. On some level it's a throwback relationship. On another level they're like two kids in their bunk bed."

"Katherine plays the darker side of the sisters," says Fogler, whose character Jacob falls for Queenie. "She's more cerebral, but also has this great vulnerability. Katherine's a fantastic actress and what she brings to the role is a very specific sensitivity, but also strength. Each one of them is trying to find themselves. They're all fish out of water; quirky misfits who form this little family. And each one has something that is beneficial to save the day."

I think that's something we all want to do. We all want to be part of a gang."

Like Fogler with Jacob, Waterston found much to connect to with hercharacter. "I loved [Tina's] duality when I first read the script. She's a courageous coward. I found that easy to relate to. Most people are not one thing. We all have lots of different, often contradictory qualities bubbling to the surface all the time. We all [have] these different levels of fear and courage, confidence and desire."

Tina's outfit, says Atwood, were determined by both her personality and the fact that she's been demoted from her position of an Auror at MACUSA and is trying to work her way back into favor with her bosses. "Tina is one of those quirky girls, a bit gawky, not quite there in her body. I made the decision to put her in trousers from the start, which was not so common in the period but did exist. She's hiding a lot, doing her own private eye thing, so I gave her a trench coat with a really big collar she could tuck her head behind."

"There's this lovely self-consciousness about her and a great youthful spirit," says Sudol. "She's not doing anything to be cute or get attention. She's trying to go from A to B, but Jacob inspires her to feel fun and playful. It's fun to let go of worrying about what people might think of you, and embrace being a kid [again]."

As for Queenie, Atwood imbued Tina's sister's outfits with a sense of fun."There was an element of air and light to it that I liked for Queenie. I made her a coat she wears a lot. I hade it woven. Underneath she wears a take on a witch's dress, but with a Twenties slant."

The home Tina shares with her sister Queenie is a two-room apartmentspread over one floor of a brownstone. Originally written to be their mother's apartment, the styling is "more the taste of an older generation in its furnishing," Craig explains.

It is principally two room with what is called apocket door, a sliding door in between the two. In our case, one was the living room and the back was a shared bedroom. The kitchen was one corner of the living space. It was a big house by definition but they had a very small part of it.They lived very modestly."

 "He's very high up the command chain and is there to investigate anyone who is potentially detrimental to wizard-kind,trifling with Dark Arts," says Colin Farrell who plays Graves. "He would get involved if there was an attack against wizards from No-Majs as well. But it's mostly the maintenance, the protection and the upholding of the laws we have set forth in North America to protect wizard-kind. He's highly skilled, he's incredibly well trained, and incredibly powerful."

"Credence is a young man who, like so many young men, seems lost in life," says Farrell. "The world is a mystery to him, as he is a mystery to himself. There's a little bit of manipulation, a little bit of guidance, and a little bit of support and tenderness [in their relationship]."

For Colin Farrell's high-ranking Auror, costume designer Colleeen Atwood opted not to dress him in typical wizard attire. "I didn't want togive him a robe. I wanted to do a slighly elegant, dandy thing with hiswaistcoat and collar. Colin [Farrell] is a beautiful man and I wanted to empower him, so I exaggerated things with huge spat boots and bigger shoulders, like a Joan Crawford shoulders. We hade different sizes for different shots. I also gave him a black and white clerical vibe and wanted his coat to have that sweep. I found this amazing cashmere that had a shine but not enough it looked blingy. He wore it well.

"Colleen did a lot of work for me," says Farrell."Really gorgeous threads. Great big long coat that bordered on being acloak. It had that priestly feel that was representative of [Graves']life, his ideologies and beliefs and discipline. Colleen killed it." And particularly the scene in MACUSA's Pentagram Office where hundreds of wizards and witches from all over the world have gathered to discuss the worseningthreat level in New York City. "There must have been two hundred actorsand extras all in different costumes," Farrell continues. "Wizardsfrom Hungary, from Mongolia, from Russia, from Thailand, from Ireland, and fromPakistan. It was amazing. They all had culturally relevant garb but with alittle wizarding flourish. It was like the craziest version of the United Colors of Benetton."

Unlike the world of Harry Potter, the New York wizarding community that Newt finds himself in is one awash in fear and paranoia. "It's still very much a community that has yet to have full courage and conviction of its own power and presence," says Carmen Ejogo who plays the President of Magical Congress of the United States. "There is a lot of insecurity within the community - as to whether they should be given the same amount of respect and space as the No-Majs. That's the constant tension within the community whether they should stand up for themselves and be exposed or remain in the shadows."

Given that dilemma the responsibility of upholding MACUSA's Statue of Secrecy, often comes down to a political balancing act. "My essential task is to protect the wizarding community from being exposed because with exposure could come war and, potentially, the destruction of our community,"says Ejogo. "She's a politician at times, and with that comes the potential for being misunderstood. She has to some times play both sides. But she is passionate and committed to the community, and that is ultimately her objective, to keep them safe."

It'll be interesting to see how the audience takes to her dilemma ,because at times she has to do the thing the audience doesn't want to see happen to Newt and Tina. But that's being the head of MACUSA."

For MACUSA President Seraphina Picquery, Atwood was inspired by an early draft of the script to the character being from Africa. "I thought about West African turbans and showed one to David who said 'that would be amazing.' She also has a dress with the Thunderbird emblem on it, although when she's out in New York, I put her in a more tailored look and a magical coat like Graves, because they're the two more empowered wizards in the story."

Allof the operating floors are designed to be below the concourse. There were five or six levels of lower basement, one of which is where Tina and Queenie work.The more menial the job, the lower the level of basement, the more dreadful the conditions.”

As seen on the floor of MACUSA's main lobby as well as behind Seraphina Picuqery's throne in the Pentagram Office, the logo for the Magical Congress of the United States was the frist thing created by graphic designers MinaLima for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them using the phoenix, the bird of MACUSA, and the Stars and Stripes which, in 1926, featured just 48 states. "We looked at the Amercian seal, which is an eagle, and wanted it to have that sense of tradition and history Americans are familiar with and expect in an institution," says Miraphora Mina. "We deliberately deconstructed the flag so the 48 stars are breaking away and becoming part ofthe sky in a wizard way, as well as mixing the fire with the shape of the phoenix. But it also could be the wings. Again it needed to be anchored intraditon; it's an institution that has a bit of a dogma compared to the Ministry of Magic."

Buried in the bowls of the Woolworth Building, in the actual bedrockof Manhattan itself, the Death Chamber is an exceedingly sinister setting."David [Yates] requested a very clinical, cold, austere, frightening place," explains Stuart Craig.

The New York Ghost is the newspaper of choice for North American witches and wizards. Designed by MinaLima to emulate the US papers of the era, notably The New York Times. The New York Ghost shares the same humorous headlines "WizJazz takes New York by Storm" and silly adverts as seen in the Daily Prophet in Harry Potter. "We brought the same spirit,"says Lima who designed both. Other notable magical publications include The Wizard's Voice and Transfiguration Today, which as stated on the front cover of the latest issue, welcomei ts newest contributor, one Albus Dumbledore.

In 1920s Amercia you find a very divided society. The magical community is very concerned and fearful of being exposed and there are hints throughout of Salem. And although it's not explored in great detail, you see the concern and fear of being exposed, and that is what gets Tina in trouble. By saving someone she exposes herself as a witch."

Ever since the Salem trials which brought about the formation of themagical Congress of the United States of Amercia, the ghosts of those tragicevents have hung darkly over the wizarding community, not least how they areperceived by No-Majs. "They're feared," says Colin Farrell.

"Mary Lou Barebone is an evangelical character with a strong belief witches exist in New York, and wants to bring that to the attention of Every New Yorker," says director David Yates. "She's an extremist. She represents the darker, broodier, more melancholic aspects of our story. What's Jo's created is a very rich, almost novelistic world with a lot of very diverse colors, emotionally, and she represents this very eerie, strange fringe of the story."

"Credence is going through a lot, but we're not aware of what," says Jenn Murray who plays one of his two adopted sisters. "Chastity looks at him as rebellious and not paying attention and not doing things the right way. She fears any time he's out of line, he needs to be put back."
